La Zone Extreme

by Kiko Matsing

Was it a simple matter of sheep-like timidity in the face of authority? The contestant’s [the one pushing the lever] life and liberty were not under any real threat from the host (tyrant) nor the audience (mob), so there was no real compulsion to follow. It must also come from the pressure to perform within the game setting, which establishes its own rules and reality. The focus of the camera further adds an unnatural urgency to the performance. How does 380V feel? Is it trivial to be able to empathize with this pain? Is it false to assume that no one is allowed to die in a game show? Perhaps some bloodletting would have turned out different results.
