Lola sa Tuhod

by Kiko Matsing

My maternal great-grandmother (the tall one on the right) had a regal bearing in her baro’t saya.

The gauzy blouse (baro) is made of either banana or pineapple fiber, and had exaggerated, bell-shaped sleeves, while the skirt (saya) looks like it’s made from printed silk.

Grandmother is the child sitting on the left side.
